Is OSHA Training Mandatory in the Construction Industry?

Yes, such training is mandatory and has been since the enactment of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Similarly, the State of California has stringent requirements for such training, which include confined space training in Los Angeles.

Confined Spaces Can Be Fatal

The State of California maintains records of events where workers are injured or killed in confined spaces. Two such events resulted in one worker dying from gasoline fumes in a manhole while another died after falling waist deep headfirst into a quantity of sawdust inside a silo. Adequate safety precautions in both cases could have prevented these two horrific deaths. Additional cases have happened where one worker died, and a second worker died while trying to rescue the first worker. Negligence kills, which is why adherence to OSHA regulations is paramount when it comes to worker safety.

OSHA in Torrance, CA

Creation World Safety serves the entire Los Angeles area, which includes Torrance. The overseeing state organization is Cal/OSHA. While harmful event statistics specifically for OSHA in Torrance, CA, are not available through the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), those from California as a whole are largely representative. According to the BLS, the percentage of injuries and deaths that occur in likely scenarios in the construction industry is as follows:

  • Harmful substances: 25%
  • Falls, slips, and trips: 17%
  • Transportation mishaps: 25%
  • Other construction-centric mishaps: 12%

The remaining percentage of mishaps, such as violent acts or other crimes, aren’t specific to the construction industry and wouldn’t be overseen by OSHA anyway.

How We Can Help Ensure Your OSHA Compliance

First, we serve three distinct groups of clients:

  • Individuals
  • Businesses
  • Other organizations

By learning what we teach, you, your employees, and/or your colleagues can first learn how to be safe. You can also learn how to conform to both federal and state regulations. Through such learning, everyone can become certified in any one of a number of safety disciplines. These include training regarding confined spaces, areas with hazardous materials, conservation of hearing, and many others.

We offer the 10-hour certification course for employees and the 30-hour course for management personnel. Both of these comprise multiple five-hour classes and cover a wide range of safety topics from hazardous materials to fire prevention. For people who are going to work more with hazardous materials than others, we also provide the 40-hour series of classes. For everyone who passes the 40-hour series, there is also the eight-hour refresher course annually.

Our confined space training in Los Angeles covers not only making the spaces safe for workers but also how to do rescues safely. Combined with all other safety classes, general first-aid classes and classes specific to CPR are also available. We are truly a “one-stop shop” when it comes to helping to keep your workers both safe and certified.
