HAZWOPER: What it Stands For & How We Can Train You!

Many of us have heard the term “HAZWOPER” thrown around, but we do not know what HAZWOPERit means. You may have heard the term used in relation to a safety course, or perhaps you’ve heard it referenced in terms of dangerous materials. Well today, Creation World Safety is here to teach you all you need to know about our HAZWOPER course including what it means, what the course entails, and the benefits of becoming certified!

What is the Definition of HAZWOPER?

HAZWOPER stands for “Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response”. This term was developed to protect workers at hazardous sites where waste has been dumped, posing a threat to our environment and the people in it.

What Does HAZWOPER Certification Entail?

Certification is required for any individual working in an environment where copious amounts of hazardous waste can be found. There are a few different course levels depending on the job title. They include:

  • 40 hours of training that is both classroom and hands on training with specialized equipment. This 40 hour training period is only needed for individuals working in an uncontained, uncontrolled hazardous area
  • For those simply visiting hazardous areas as part of their job, a 24-hour training and certification period is provided. This training includes 24 hours of classroom materials and one day of on-field instruction
  • An 8-hour refresher course is required to maintain certification. This is for those who are already 24/40 hour HAZWOPER certified
  • Lastly, we offer a first responder course for those emergency personnel, firefighters and police that are entering emergency situations in hazardous areas

What are the Benefits?

All of our courses comply with OSHA regulations and are required for companies subjecting workers to hazardous waste. In the courses, students will learn the basics of HAZWOPER elements and safety, what PPE Programs entail and the use of PPE, effects of radiological and biological exposures, and much more. This course is beneficial to keep your workers safe, and knowledgeable of how to conduct themselves in a dangerous situation.
