Ensure A Safe Workplace with Machine Guarding

Here at Creation World Safety, people and safety are our top priorities. We aim to make your workplace the safest possible environment for your employees through world-class safety training and certification courses.

Unfortunately, in many workplaces, exposure to unguarded or inadequately guarded machinery is a daily occurrence. This poses many dangers to workers – including, but not limited to – crushing, lacerations, amputations, and death. Your workers are at risk if they operate or maintain machinery; protect them now by giving them the safety training tools they need!

Understanding Machines

There are three main areas of a machine: the point of operation, the power transmission device, and the operating controls.

Point of Operation

The point of operation is the area of the machine on which work is performed. Safeguarding this area is of utmost importance, as employees are at risk of injury if any parts of their bodies come into contact with it. A guarding device must therefore be present, and it must allow the employee to operate the machine without putting any part of his or her body in the danger zone.

Power Transmission Device

The power transmission device includes all parts of the mechanical system that transmit energy to the point of operation, such as flywheels, belts, connecting rods, spindles, pulleys, chains, and gears.

Operating Controls

The operating controls on a machine enable the user to power and operate the machine without leaving his or her position or coming into contact with the area where the work is performed. The controls must enable safe administration and utilization of the machine.

Evaluate Your Machinery & Environment

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to evaluate the safety of your equipment and machinery.

  1. Are machine guards provided to protect the operator and other employees in the area from hazards created by rotating parts, flying chips, and sparks?
  2. When possible, are guards attached to the machines, and if that is not possible, attached elsewhere?
  3. Is the point of operation on cutters, shears, power presses, milling machines, power saws, jointers, portable power tools, forming rolls, and calendars guarded with a machine guard?
  4. Are the machines designed for a fixed location securely anchored to prevent walking or moving?
