Five Tips for Forklift Safety

Operating heavy machinery on a job site requires training, experience, certification, and presence of mind. At Creation World Safety we offer classes and safety training programs to reduce the losses that impact the work environment. Sign up for Forklift, CPR, Fire, Confined space training, and many more in the Torrance and Los Angeles area, and Creation World Safety will design a course to suit your company’s needs.

1) Check Forklift Condition Before Operating

Forklift operators should always perform a thorough inspection of the machine before operating, including examining the tires, checking the oil levels, checking for oil, radiator, and water leaks, testing breaks, lights, horn, and steering, and finally ensuring that the fork itself is straight and not cracked.

2) Remain Alert to Potential Hazards

Before operating, check the surrounding area for uneven surfaces, overhead obstacles, and difficult to navigate aisles and turns. Carefully account for inventory that could fall if a collision were to occur, and exercise extreme caution. Pedestrians and other employees in the area should be made aware of the forklift operation and remain at a safe distance.

3) Control Traffic with Floor Marking and Signage

Floor markings are essential for improving workflow, keeping bystanders out of harm’s way, and preventing the forklift from colliding with inventory or other machines. Easy-to-read floor signs remind operators of speed limits, identify loading docks, ramps, and other important areas or hazards.

4) Clear the Path and Balance the Load

Always keep an eye on where you are going when operating a forklift. If the load you are carrying blocks your view of the path, travel in reverse. Always ensure that the load is balanced, as an unbalanced load can fall off or even cause the forklift to tip over.

5) Receive Forklift Safety Training

The most important milestone on the path to forklift safety is to receive thorough training that meets OSHA requirements. Trainees require supervision while they receive instruction, hands-on experience, and demonstrate capability before certification. All of the courses and training offered by Creation World Safety meet OSHA requirements and are guaranteed to prepare your workforce to safely operate equipment and respond in the event of an emergency.
