Summer Safety Tips for the Workplace

Summer is here! While it’s great that the days stay sunnier during the day, the heat also comes with it. In Southern California, summer temperatures can reach up to around 80-90 degrees. For workers, it’s important to take all precautions to protect themselves from heat exhaustion. At Creation World Safety, our mission is to educate all businesses and employees on how to stay safe and healthy in the workplace. Our consulting firm provides quality corporate safety training in the LA and Torrance area. We have 5 tips to make sure that you can stay cool this summer in your workplace.

  • Dress Appropriately- Dress for the weather occasion. Keep cool by wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothes with breathable fabrics. If you work inside and have a strong AC, wear layers. Also, don’t forget about safety. You might not be able to wear clothing that leaves your skin exposed, because of the risk of equipment. Overall, dress to keep safety and heat in mind.
  • Cover-Up in the Right Way- If you spend hours working outside and/or near outdoor light, wear sunscreen where the skin is exposed. Apply sunscreen (with both UVA and UVA ray protection) throughout the day. Wear a hat and sunglasses to protect your head and eyes as well. These steps can protect you from skin cancer.
  • Stay Hydrated- Stay hydrated with water throughout the day. Dehydration can happen even when we don’t realize it. It happens when your body doesn’t have enough water to function properly. One common way dehydration speeds up is by sweating, which is even more common in the summertime. A good rule is to drink water every 20 minutes. And don’t rely on coffee, tea, or caffeinated drinks to keep yourself hydrated.
  • Be Cautious of Heat-Related Illnesses- Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion. If you feel light-headed, dizzy, or have a headache, break to find an air source and freshwater to refuel. Ask others for help and seek medical attention. It’s also important to know in case you’re ever in a situation where your assistance may be needed.
  • Beat the Heat- Workers exposed to the summer heat should have measures taken to reduce stress from heat. During the summer, workers should always have a cool area to break away from the heat. This could mean setting up shaded areas and investing in air conditioning so workers can break in a cool and well-ventilated area.
  • It is mandatory to have a heat illness prevention program in your IIPP MANUAL.
